On chartering from Athens
Athens works as a private-aviation base for a simple structural reason: it is the hub of an archipelago that is genuinely inconvenient to reach any other way. Eleftherios Venizelos has two runways, 4,000 m and 3,800 m, handled 283,589 aircraft movements in 2025, and routes private traffic through a dedicated General Aviation Terminal at Gate 12 at the north end of the field. That terminal runs 24 hours, which matters when island departures shift late into the evening on a windy August day.
The island shuttle defines the summer. Mykonos and Santorini are 30 to 40 minutes from Athens, Paros and Naxos similar, Crete about an hour. Light jets do most of this work because the sectors are too short to justify anything larger. What limits the operation is not aircraft supply but ground space: island airports run out of parking well before they run out of slots, so aircraft routinely drop passengers and return to Athens empty. That pattern is the engine behind the region's empty-leg market.
Two destinations deserve specific caution. Santorini has a short runway and an approach that not every operator will accept at full load, so the aircraft type has to be matched to the destination rather than to the passenger count. And the meltemi, the northerly summer wind, produces genuine delays and occasional diversions across the Cyclades in July and August. Experienced Greek operators plan for both, but a first-time charterer comparing quotes on price alone can end up with an aircraft that cannot complete the mission on the day.
The handling market in Athens is unusually competitive for a single-airport city, which works in the customer's favour. Goldair Handling, Skyserv, Swissport Executive, Signature Flight Support and Universal Aviation all operate business-aviation services, alongside Greek specialists including Alpha Jet Services and Click Aviation Network. That depth keeps ground pricing sensible and means there is normally someone available even during peak August weekends, when a single-handler airport would simply be full.
